Vertigo review
Vertigo, have a meaning of feeling dizzy and head spinning. Every one has experienced vertigo. But it is hard to describe it. Even though, in the movie Vertigo, a 1958 American psychological thriller film directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense, have successfully did it.
In Vertigo, John Scottie Ferguson, a former police detective, is forced into early retirement due to an incident in the line of duty, which cause him to develop acrophobia and vertigo. Later on, Scottie is hired by an acquaintance, Gavein Elster, as a private investigator to follow Gavin’s wife Madeleine, who behaving strangely.
After watching the movie, for me, this movie is more like an art piece. The role modeling, background music and the story of the movie combine like an artwork; once you starting to look at it, you cant help keep watching it. The plot of the story is clear and easy to understand, and the acting of the characters is very impress.
Human have many emotions. Among them, the emotion of love is the most complicate one. Because of love, human would have irrational movement. In the movie because the love of Madeleine, Scottie accept the request of Gavin even he unaccepted at the first place. Because of love, Judy accepts to meet Scottie even it come with a huge risk. In my opinion, I think the word ‘vertigo’ not only as a noun used as a name of the movie, but also used to describe the relationship between the two main characters. However, the movie also wants to give us a message: fantasy is always good, but the reality is always cruel. Although people always have fantasy of love, but they always forgot the cruel of the reality. The identity of Madeleine and the strong possessive instinct of Scottie have decided their relationship would end up with no good, only ruin. Have a look to our society; many young couple breaks up because they ignore the reality.
Next, since the movie have been classify as psychological thriller, the movie was full of mysterious, sad atmosphere, the movie often fill with slow, deep, and sudden high, sharp rhythm, which driven the emotions of the audience very well. Also, in the movie, we followed the footstep of Scottie, what the audiences know is same as him, which makes the audience, want to know what would happen even more. After watching the movie, I recalled a famous quote from Howard Phillips Lovecraft ‘he oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown’ indeed, in the movie, the director used ‘ghost’ to attract audience’s interest. However, from the beginning to the end of the film, we never actually see a ghost, but we still feel afraid. Why? We afraid because we never see a ghost, and we would never know what will happen next. A friend of mine asked me one day ‘do you afraid of ghost?’ ‘No’ I answered him. In my opinion, people is much more scarier then ghost, since we could never expect what people can or will do. In the movie, the hoodlum used the emotions and vertigo of Scottie, the weakness of humanity and the shortages of psychological in order to fulfill his plan step by step, which is clever, but also terrifying.
Finally, I think the movie deserved to be both classic of romantic and psychological horror movie. No matter the actor, music or the story is fantastic even combine it with modern standard.
